Lupita Rodriguez views service as an ongoing commitment to community health and well-being. Her journey began at home, growing up in a low-income family where resources and services were often limited鈥攊f available at all. From lining up for toy drives to navigating healthcare gaps with her family, Lupita鈥檚 early experiences shaped her understanding of the challenges faced by underserved communities. These moments instilled in her a deep desire to give back and support others in meaningful and sincere ways.

During her undergraduate studies, a pivotal moment came through her service-learning internship at Westminster Free Clinic. There, Lupita witnessed firsthand how healthcare, community outreach, and food access intersect to create complex challenges for the communities she served. She came to understand that improving health outcomes is not solely about treating patients鈥攊t also requires connecting individuals to resources, education, and culturally responsive care. Lupita, who graduated in 2022 with a degree in Health Science, carried these insights into her core values, strengthening her ongoing commitment to community wellness and service.

Moving Service from Clinic Floors to Community Outreach

After graduation, Westminster Free Clinic hired Lupita, where she served in a variety of roles, from assisting with the on-site food pantry to supporting clinic operations and participating in offsite community health outreach efforts. Through her outreach work鈥攃onducting blood pressure and glucose screenings and helping coordinate patient intake鈥攕he gained a deeper understanding of the medical and food access challenges facing the community.

At outreach events held at locations such as Oxnard College, Lupita witnessed how limited awareness of health conditions can significantly impact daily life. Some of her most impactful experiences involved patients arriving with dangerously high glucose levels, unaware that they were prediabetic or diabetic. By providing education and connecting individuals to resources, Lupita helped families take control of their health and prevent more serious complications.

She also came to appreciate the importance of extended evening hours. Many farmworkers and low-income patients are unable to take time off during the day, so evening hours allowed Westminster Free Clinic to meet patients where they are. Lupita realized that true healthcare accessibility goes beyond providing services鈥攊t requires meeting people physically, culturally, and socially.

Her Identity with Community and Leadership

As Lupita worked alongside clinicians, volunteers, and community partners, her understanding of community-centered service deepened. Observing the impact of collaboration and awareness, she recognized their critical role in supporting underserved communities. She also gained valuable leadership experience by mentoring high school interns, supporting volunteers, and introducing them to diverse pathways into healthcare beyond traditional roles like nursing. Witnessing the growth and success of those she supported left a lasting impression on her.

Through these experiences, Lupita developed a broader perspective on the barriers to care, including transportation challenges and limited awareness of available resources. She came to understand that health extends far beyond clinical care. This realization continues to shape her approach to service, as she strives to provide practical support while empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to improve their health outcomes.

Hopes and Aspirations for the Future

Currently pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in Healthcare Administration at 海角社区CI, Lupita aims to improve food equity and healthcare access in the communities she serves. She hopes to one day establish a nonprofit organization modeled after Westminster Free Clinic鈥攐ne that meets people where they are and provides accessible, culturally informed, and relevant services. Drawing from her own experiences growing up underserved, Lupita is able to connect deeply with those she serves and hopes to give back while offering others the same sense of hope she once received.

In her current role in community engagement, Lupita supports volunteers by communicating impact, creating opportunities for growth, and motivating others to stay involved. She believes that empowering others is an extension of direct service, helping care and compassion ripple throughout the community.

Service and Looking Ahead

For Lupita, service is not a singular achievement but a continuous commitment to uplifting others. Her journey highlights the power of empathy, education, and access to healthcare. Looking ahead, she hopes to expand her nonprofit efforts, advocate for more equitable health services, and inspire others to engage in community service.

Her story reflects that service is both a personal and collective effort鈥攐ne that requires understanding, compassion, and a dedication to creating lasting impact. Her advice to students: 鈥淒on鈥檛 give up. Even when things are hard, keep going. Stay committed to your goals and trust yourself. Don鈥檛 follow others if it doesn鈥檛 align with your path鈥攆ocus on what鈥檚 best for you and keep pushing forward.鈥
