Volunteer Engagement Ambassador
For Vance Garcia, service is not an abstract idea or a requirement to fulfill鈥攊t is a responsibility shaped by lived experience. His work in Community Outreach and Care Coordination with the Brain Injury Center of Ventura County (BIC) is grounded in something deeply personal: the understanding that recovery after a brain injury can feel isolating, uncertain, and overwhelming. Through every conversation, resource, and connection he helps facilitate, Vance works toward a clear goal鈥攖o ensure that no one has to navigate that journey alone.
From Survivor to Advocate
Vance鈥檚 path to service began long before he stepped into a professional role. As a traumatic brain injury and stroke survivor, he first came to the Brain Injury Center as a participant, attending support groups and community events. In those spaces, he found something essential鈥攃onnection with people who understood the challenges he was facing in ways others could not.
But alongside that sense of belonging, Vance began to notice a recurring sentiment among fellow survivors: many wished they had found the organization sooner. That idea stayed with him. He recognized how easily people could fall through the cracks after leaving medical care, and how access to the right support鈥攁t the right time鈥攃ould shape the course of recovery.
What began as participation gradually evolved into purpose. During his final semester at 海角社区 Channel Islands, Vance chose to center his Communication Capstone project on the Brain Injury Center, focusing on outreach and communication. With the support of the BIC鈥檚 Executive Director, Chrissy Stamegna, he transformed a class project into meaningful service鈥攄esigning flyers, creating brochures, and supporting outreach efforts that extended the organization鈥檚 reach into the community.
He also credits a pivotal moment in his Communication 101 course with Professor Amy Edwards, whose class helped him recognize the power of sharing his story. What once felt personal became something larger鈥攁 tool for connection, understanding, and encouragement. That realization marked a turning point, showing Vance that his experiences could serve others in meaningful ways.
That project became more than an academic milestone. After graduating in 2024 with a degree in Organizational Communication, Vance was offered a position at the Brain Injury Center, allowing him to continue and expand the work he had started鈥攖his time as a dedicated advocate for others navigating recovery.
Service in Action: Reaching People When It Matters Most
Today, Vance鈥檚 service is centered on connection at critical moments. His outreach focuses on reaching individuals shortly after they leave hospitals or rehabilitation centers鈥攐ften a time when support systems feel unclear or incomplete. By collaborating with healthcare providers, clinics, and community organizations across Ventura County, he helps bridge the gap between medical care and long-term support.
For Vance, outreach is not simply about providing information. It is about timing, trust, and persistence. He understands that the opportunity to reach someone can be brief, and that missing that moment can mean prolonged isolation. Because of this, he prioritizes follow-up, relationship-building, and consistency in his work with providers and partners.
Underlying this approach is his own experience鈥攔eflecting on how easily support could have been delayed or overlooked. That perspective informs how he engages with others, driving him to ensure that fewer individuals feel alone in the early stages of recovery.
In addition to direct outreach, Vance contributes by developing materials that make support more visible and accessible. From flyers to brochures to community-facing resources, his work helps translate the organization鈥檚 mission into something tangible鈥攕omething people can see, hold, and act on. Whether he is attending a health fair, visiting a clinic, or speaking with a provider, each interaction becomes an opportunity to extend that reach.
At the heart of his work is a simple but meaningful shift in perspective. Instead of hearing, 鈥淚 wish I had found this sooner,鈥 Vance hopes more individuals will say they found support exactly when they needed it.
Creating Spaces of Understanding
Vance鈥檚 commitment to service extends beyond outreach into the environments he helps create. He is intentional about ensuring that BIC programs are welcoming and accessible to all participants, recognizing that brain injury affects individuals in diverse and often invisible ways.
Small adjustments鈥攔educing noise, dimming lights, and fostering respectful, structured group spaces鈥攃an significantly impact whether someone feels comfortable enough to engage. Vance approaches these details with care, understanding that inclusion is often built through thoughtful, consistent actions rather than large gestures.
What distinguishes Vance鈥檚 approach is not just what he does, but how he does it. His work is guided by empathy, shaped by his own journey but always centered on the needs of others. While he does not lead with his personal story, he draws on it when it can create connection or reassurance. In those moments, his service becomes something more than support; it becomes a shared understanding.
Looking Ahead
As Vance looks to the future, he hopes to expand his outreach efforts beyond Ventura County, reaching more individuals who may still be navigating recovery without adequate support. His work continues to be driven by a commitment to connection鈥攅nsuring that fewer people feel isolated, and more people feel seen, supported, and understood.
For students at 海角社区 Channel Islands, Vance offers simple but meaningful advice: show up. Engage with your professors, connect with classmates, and take advantage of the opportunities that exist within your community. After years of virtual learning, he encourages students to embrace in-person experiences, build relationships, and fully invest in their college journey.
And if you do find yourself on campus, Vance adds with a smile鈥攕top by the Town Center and grab a bite from Tortillas, one of his personal favorites.
No matter where his path leads, Vance鈥檚 purpose remains steady. Through every conversation, every connection, and every effort to reach someone in need, he continues to build something larger than himself鈥攁 network of support rooted in empathy, understanding, and the belief that no one should have to face recovery alone.
