Navigating Financial Aid Opportunities: Funding Your Graduate Studies

º£½ÇÉçÇøCI is committed to assisting graduate students in securing the necessary financial resources to achieve their educational goals. The availability and amounts of financial aid are contingent upon factors such as fund availability, enrollment status, and demonstrated financial need.

  • Federal aid constitutes a primary source of funding for graduate students, predominantly through loans that offer favorable terms.

    • Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans: These loans are available to graduate students enrolled at least half-time, which at º£½ÇÉçÇøCI means a minimum of four (4) units per semester. The annual limit for these loans is up to $20,500. They carry a fixed interest rate, and students are advised to refer to for current rates. Repayment typically commences six months after graduation or after enrollment drops below half-time status.
    • Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loans: These loans are accessible to graduate students who do not have an adverse credit history. The maximum amount that can be borrowed is up to the cost of attendance minus any other financial aid received. Like unsubsidized loans, these also have a fixed interest rate, with current rates available on studentaid.gov. Various repayment options are available, and deferment may be possible while enrolled at least half-time.
    • Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program: FWS is a federal need-based program administered by the Financial Aid & Scholarships office, offering part-time employment opportunities both on and off-campus. This program allows students to earn money to help cover their educational expenses. FWS wages are paid through monthly paychecks for hours worked and are not automatically applied to university fees. To be considered for FWS, students must complete a FAFSA and demonstrate federal financial need according to the Financial Aid & Scholarships office policy. Crucially, post-baccalaureate graduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of four (4) units to be eligible. While FWS is often highlighted for undergraduates, º£½ÇÉçÇøCI confirms that it is a viable aid option for graduate students as well.

  • California residents and eligible non-residents may qualify for state-specific financial assistance, providing crucial support for their graduate studies.

    • State University Grant (SUG) Program: Provides need-based awards to eligible undergraduate and graduate/postbaccalaureate students who are California residents or otherwise determined eligible (such as AB 540-eligible students). Students are automatically considered when applying for financial aid through FAFSA or CADAA.
    • California Dream Act Application (CADAA): Specifically for undocumented students and certain nonresidents who meet eligibility criteria. For 2025-2026, the CADAA opens on December 1, 2024, via the California Student Aid Commission’s website. Featuring CADAA highlights º£½ÇÉçÇøCI’s commitment to inclusivity and financial access for undocumented and nonresident students, aligning with its role as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

  • Scholarships are invaluable awards that do not require repayment and can substantially reduce educational costs.

    º£½ÇÉçÇøCI Institutional Scholarships: º£½ÇÉçÇøCI offers a range of scholarships awarded based on merit and/or financial need. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to explore opportunities. The General Scholarship Application for 2025-2026 opens on October 1, 2025, and requires a personal essay (200–500 words). Filing a FAFSA or CADAA is required for need-based scholarship consideration.

  • Assistantships and fellowships provide financial support along with valuable professional or research experience. Students should inquire within their program for availability.

  • º£½ÇÉçÇøCI proudly supports active-duty service members, veterans, and military-affiliated students. Funding options include Military Tuition Assistance (TA), VA education benefits (such as the GI Bill), and other aid programs.
